Peter Artedi: Reformer of 18th Century Zoology, Vol. I
The brief for this book was very broad, asking only for fish to feature on the cover, and for Vols 1 and 2 to tie together thematically. They are a comprehensive account of the life and works of an early 18th century Swedish naturalist.
I spent many hours researching royalty-free images that would bring a little known subject to life and give it a modern appeal. This one is from the New York Public Library Digital Collections and is an authentic 18th century illustration from a rare book, famous for its detail and scientific accuracy. To complement this I chose modern but classic typography, and the lettering takes its colour palette from colours found in the illustration.
The spine, dust jacket and back cover also have to tie in with the cover design.
